SKILLING AUSTRALIA FOR THE FUTURE INITIATIVE
The Australian Government has identified a need to address skills shortages across the country with a focus on increasing and deepening the skills capacity of the Australian workforce through targeted training.
The Skilling Australia for the future initiative outlines the Government’s training commitment, ensuring the demand for skills and skills training are matched.
As part of this initiative the government has launched the Productivity Places Program to provide targeted training to address skills shortages currently experienced in many industries.
PRODUCTIVITY PLACES PROGRAM
The Productivity Places Program will establish 450,000 additional training places over four years to ensure that Australians develop the skills that the industry needs.
The Program aims to:
- deliver better training outcomes for workers
- ensure training better suits the needs of employers, and
- address skills shortages currently being experienced in many industries.
Out of the 450,000 new training places on offer, 275,000 will be for employers to train existing workers already in the workforce.
The places allocated to existing workers include 45,000 places for Australian Apprenticeships.
A further 175,000 places will be targeted at job seekers.
Which occupations/qualifications are covered under the Program?
The Productivity Places Program is focused on providing qualifications that are either an entry pathway into a skills shortage occupation, or will allow existing workers to update their skills.
NOTE: Not all occupations are supported by training at Certificate II and III levels. Jobs in some industries (eg. Mining) require training at higher levels (Certificate IV and above) to develop the appropriate skill levels.
How can you apply?
If you’re a job seeker who’s already registered with an Employment Service Provider (ESP), such as a Job Network or Disability Employment Network member, you’ll need a training referral from your ESP.
All other job seekers should visit www.skillsandtraininginfo.com.au for more information.
For existing workers - what are the benefits of being re-skilled?
As an existing worker, you will already have skills and experience that should and can be formally recognised by training providers.
For employers - what are the benefits of re-skilling your employees?
By providing existing workers with higher level skills, workers will be far better positioned to transfer their skills to other areas in the workplace and be able to adapt more quickly to the changing needs of an enterprise and the economy.
